Sustainable Wednesday: How to Engage Students and Staff in Sustainability Efforts

Welcome to the latest article in our brand new Sustainable Wednesday series, where we share insights, tips and tricks to help international education establishments reduce their carbon footprint.

Schools and campuses globally are recognising the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices in their daily operations. In this week’s article, we look at ways international schools and universities can get students and staff involved in the sustainability fight.

Integrate sustainability in the syllabus

Making sustainability a focus across disciplines ensures that all students, regardless of their field of study, gain insight into environmental issues. This can range from universities offering specific credits on sustainability, to language schools including sustainability as a topic in classroom materials.

Host seminars and workshops

Organising public seminars and workshops on sustainability can extend your establishment’s efforts beyond the school or campus. For example, experts and community leaders can be invited to speak at these events to provide valuable insights and encourage a broader dialogue around sustainability.

Offer professional development workshops

Getting staff on board in your establishment’s sustainability efforts is crucial for inciting change. Workshops can be given covering a range of topics, from basic environmental education to specific training on how to integrate sustainable practices into daily school operations and teaching methodologies.

Provide volunteering opportunities

Offering volunteering opportunities related to environmental conservation and sustainability can be another excellent way for students and staff to get involved. This might include tree planting drives, beach cleanups, or working with local farms on sustainable agricultural practices. This not only broadens the impact, but provides real-world exposure to students and staff.

Encouraging a culture of sustainability requires collaboration from everyone involved. By empowering students and equipping staff with the necessary training and knowledge, international schools and universities can lead the way in creating a greener future.

Stay tuned for more of our sustainability tips next week!
